'Nowhere Boy' to close London

LONDON -- Artist-turned-filmmaker Sam Taylor-Wood's feature debut "Nowhere Boy" will receive its world preem as the closing night pic of the Times BFI London Film Festival. The John Lennon biopic, which tells the story of the Beatle's teenage years, stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Thomas Sangster and Anne-Marie Duff.

Frosh helmer Taylor-Wood was formerly part of the Young British Artists group, which turned the Brit art scene on its head during much of the 1990s. Pic is written by Matt Greenhalgh, who won a BAFTA for "Control," about doomed Joy Division singer Ian Curtis.

The Weinstein Co. acquired all U.S., Latin American and German rights for the much-anticipated pic. Icon Film Distribution is releasing the pic in the U.K. Ecosse Films' Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae produced the project, with Hanway handling worldwide sales. Pic was co-developed by public funding org the U.K. Film Council and Film4.

As previously announced, Wes Anderson's animated "Fantastic Mr. Fox," featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray, will open the London film fest, which unspools Oct. 14-29.
